Non-invasive quality test of protective coatings - Novelty from Fraunhofer IWS Dresden

The device for measuring Young's modulus on plane faces, based on a laser-acoustic testing technique developed at Fraunhofer IWS Dresden, is commercially available since 1996. Young's modulus of the coating measured in this way is related to hardness and hence to practically relevant properties of the coated part.

Several devices have been sold, as to BAM Berlin and Eifeler Werkzeuge GmbH Düssseldorf. Along with a new design, the range of applications has been extended from plane to cylindrical parts. The device is recommended by BAM as a novel and promising technique for the urgently required testing of the mechanical properties of coatings which could not be done quickly and reliably before.
